Hi, Betty Boop.
Happy New Year to you too. Ça m'aiderait si je pouvais voir le dessin que tu décris.
The cartoonist’s goal is to denounce the weaknesses of American society with humour. Thus, this cartoon is a satire. It uses irony and caricature: irony because there is a discrepancy between what the huge woman is saying and what she is doing. She is saying (???at his upset???) that she absolutely won't eat genetically modified food because it’s unhealthy, all the while gulping down mouthfuls of potato crisps. The characters are shown in caricature because they have thin arms with huge bellies and their legs have vanished. The cartoonist wants to characterize the American lifestyle with three words: a couch, fast food and television. This satirical caricature typifies the concept of a “couch potato”. The goal of satire, as we see here, is to promote change. It is precisely this goal that the author of this cartoon hopes to achieve because a change in eating habits is called for since there is a real problem with the way food is consumed in the United States. There is no doubt that this has become one of modern society's most dangerous crises.
Voilà.
