Bonjour Doudou,

Je dois écrire un résumer de mon stage en anglais. Comme tu m'as toujours aidé je m'adresse une nouvelle fois à toi pour me corriger mes fautes en anglais. En te remerciant par avance Alexandre

Creating web portal
Extract in English from original document page 50 at 52

I. Introduction

During the spring 2010, I have done an internship in the “company Truc” (20th manufacturer in electronic component), I have designed a Web Portal which can be administrated and help the users of the company to access at the http link, at the data which are on network device, at the pictures of machine which produce electronic component etc. I worked for the engineering equipment department which is in charge of all maintenance and monitoring about the machine on Paris site.

II. Personal assessments

This internship in a multinational will be certainly an important experience for the next in my professional life. I have consolidated my technical skill in web technologies. I have seen on other side the design of different solutions. I have used a Content Management System (CMS) named Zope – CPS, the PHP technology and JavaScript. These technologies are more and more used for the internet solutions.

The web portal, I have designed, is use by many departments. Therefore with this internship, I have seen the need of each user with a nearest vision of professional world. I also involve in the search of a solution in interaction with all departments in particular with engineers and the technicians of maintenance. I have participated at meeting for present each steps of my different solutions I was working on.

This internship has been benefit because I have realized computer work in a great company where I have seen different steps of a project: restart of an existing project, study the conception, design solutions, write technical documentation and introduce the new application at the end users.

III. Technical review and critical analysis:

At end the company has chosen the CMS Zope-CPS. This one has some advantages. We can easily administrate the Web portal without need to have strong skills in computer but it has also some disadvantages. The rigid interface could discourage some users during the first use. I have try to find a solution for obtain an interface near what they want and the functionalities I have developed are here (resource access and easy way for administration). We must also say that computer department of “Truc” company imposes its interface. I had the obligation to respect the pattern of the enterprise with the frame which has the logo and then it was a constraint. However I think this solution is satisfactory for the company in short time because it own has ever a technical support. The CMS Zope – CPS is new in the company and it seems that many changes can happen in the future for this module like the migration of programming language to Python at Java. Then we can have some interrogations about this solution. If the update of this solution is too big does the society could keep this solution?

Before the Zope-CPS solution, I have written the JavaScript solution. When I am arrived in the company, it was not impossible for me to meet the computer department and the manager didn’t know if I could have a server for the project of “engineering equipment” . Then we ask me to present different solutions and one without need of a server. But this solution without a server, Javascript, that I have started at begin of my internship could have been possible only for a little society with a limited number of connexions. This solution is like remake of a database with files but the complete realisation would have been too long and the maintenance hard to ensure. The only advantage of this solution is we don’t need a server of database. For a multinational with some pick of 100 connexions per hour and in context of accessibility of extra site, we can see this advantage is not enough for consider this solution.

Finally, I have realised a PHP solution which is for me the best solution but this own has been rejected because we didn’t have any server. I would like however present this version. I have then used embedded software that realizes the same functionality of a server in a context of presenting project. But we couldn’t deploy this solution in this case. We should have installed a real server with “Apache”, in Linux environment for example and with a MySQL database. We could also consider 3 tiers architecture: 1) database server, 2) application server and 3) client. This structure is often use. I have designed PHP solution which corresponded exactly at what the maintenance department wants: same interface with friendly functionalities but this own was depending on a server and the computer department didn’t wish to install it. This point of view can be understood in the sense they didn’t want heterogeneous software in the company

Then I realised 3 systems (Zope – CPS, JavaScript, PHP /MySQL) for give an easy access at the user of web portal. The system chosen by the enterprise is not the own I have chosen for the reason I just explain before. The Zope – CPS solution is the own which is known and support in the company. We can be surprised of this choice when we know the couple PHP/MySQL is often used in the computer world.

IV. Summary:

I have proposed 3 solutions (ZOPE –CPS, JavaScript, and PHP/MySQL) for allow the web portal of “truc company” to be administrable. The first solution, based on JavaScript technology, is widely use on the internet. The principle was to remake the work of a database with the help of files but this case was not the own the society could choice. After, I have proposed the solution PHP/MySQL, a programming language with a database client/server, but I was limited by the use of embedded tools and it was not adapted. We should install a real server. Finally, the last solution, has answered at the entire requirements with a little sacrifice in friendly interface. The use of Content management system (CMS) “ZOPE – CPS” has been the solution because all the functionalities was here and it’s this own the computer department can maintain. So naturally I take this own solution and I install it for the users.

This internship has been going well and I have consolidated my skills in web technologies. The fact to work in an enterprise of this size has been a rich experience for me and a future job in computer science. I have been in contact with many employers so it’s also a rich experience for share my knowledge in computer. This internship learnt me how organize my work with what the users expected. This internship also gives me the possibility to be entirely actor of one department of the society. I have organized some meetings for explain my work and my different solutions I was developing. It has been also rewarding because my work has been presented on other site like Grenoble. Already many users use it on the Paris site because this web portal is the centre of information for all the maintenance. The technician in “white room” use it every day for look at some information for help them for fix problems with machines or for optimize the production. The goal has been reached, the presented solution answers at the request of the users and this solution is appreciated

We can point out a new professional experience in a big structure is always good for learn in technical point of view but also for human relationship. Before I had worked for 5 years in a computer department, for a national group, and today I can compare my 2 experiences. In the first case the cost was not the main criteria but the efficient was required. For my internship, the cost was the major factor. Each company has their imperative and it’s finally the role of the computer scientist nowadays with their skills to propose different solutions for answer at what the system information users want.

V. Outlook

First of all I want clarify that it was the first time the “company Truc” was migrating a website of this size on this content management system (ZOPE-CPS). My role was to propose, to give and explain advantages and disadvantages of each solutions.

My Zope – CPS solution will be working on long term period if the computer department keeps these engagements for the support.

Finally I want to say that the version I have designed is operational and I had started to teach how use this new tool at the users. This administrable portal has been presented on other site like Grenoble; we can then suppose that it will take importance in the future.

This internship in a multinational will certainly be an important experience for the next few years of my professional life. I have succeeded in consolidating my technical skills in web technology. I have a new perspective concerning the design of different solutions. I have used a Content Management System (CMS) named Zope – CPS, the PHP technology and JavaScript. The web portal I designed is being used by many departments. Therefore with this internship, I have become aware of each user's needs ???. I have participated in meetings to present each step of the different solutions I was working on.

This internship has been a benefit to me in that I have been able to accomplish much in the computer field working in a great company where I have seen the different steps of a project, such as resuming an existing project, studying its conception, designing solutions, writing technical documentation, and introducing new applications for end users.

III. Technical review and critical analysis:

The company finally chose the CMS Zope-CPS because it has a number of advantages. We can easily manage the Web portal without needing strong computer skills, but it also has some disadvantages. The rigid interface could discourage some users during the first use. I have tried to find a solution such as providing an interface matching their expectations. T functionalities I have developed are here (resource access and ease of administration). It should also be noted that the computer department of “Truc” company requires the use of its own interface. I was obliged to respect the [pattern of the enterprise with the frame which has the logo and then it was a constraint] <= incompréhensible. However I think my solution is a satisfactory one for the company ???in short time because it own has ever a technical support???. The CMS Zope – CPS is new in the company, and it seems that many changes can take place in the future for this module like the ???migration of programming language to Python at Java. Then we can have some discussions about this solution. If the update to this solution is too extensive, one may well wonder if it will be accepted by all users.

Before the Zope-CPS solution, I wrote the JavaScript solution. When I arrived at the company, I was able to meet the computer department, and the manager didn’t know if I could have a server for the project of “engineering equipment” . Then they asked me to present different solutions including one not requiring a server. Javascript was the solution I came up with at the beginning of my internship, and it didn't require a server; but it could only be used by a small number of people with a limited number of connexions. Such a solution practically necessitates the reconstruction of the database with files, but the final product would have been too long and the maintenance hard to guarantee. The only advantage of this solution is that we don’t need a database server. For a multinational company which can choose among 100 connexions per hour and [in context of accessibility of extra site] incompréhensible, we can see how this advantage is not sufficient to be considered a solution.
I finally came up with a PHP solution which is for me the best solution but which was rejected because we didn’t have any server. These are the steps I took. I used embedded software that offers the same functionality as a server [in a context of presenting project] incompréhensible. But we couldn’t implement this solution in this case. We should have installed a real server with “Apache”, in a Linux environment for example and with a MySQL database. We could also considered a 3-tier architecture: a database server, an application server, and a client. This structure is often used. I designed a PHP solution which corresponded exactly to what the maintenance department wanted: the same interface with friendly functionalities; but all this depended on a server, and the computer department refused to install it. The system chosen by the enterprise is not the one I chose for the reasons I just explained before. The Zope – CPS solution is the one which is known and supported by the company. Small wonder when we consider the fact that the couple PHP/MySQL combination is often used in the computer world.

I should point out that a new professional experience in a large organization is always the best place to learn things from a technical point of view as well as the place to foster human relationships.
Before I had worked for 5 years in a computer department, for a national group, and today I can compare my 2 experiences. In the first case the cost was not the main criteria but the efficient was required.
At one time, I spent 5 years working in a computer department for a national group. Today, I have the opportunity of comparing both experiences. In the first case, cost was not a priority, just efficiency.
For my internship, the cost was the major factor. Each company has their imperative and it’s finally the role of the computer scientist nowadays with their skills to propose different solutions for answer at what the system information users want.
Cost, however, was a major factor on my internship. Each company has its own imperatives; and nowadays, it's the role of the computer scientist with all of his skills to propose different solutions in a search for answers as to the kind of information sought by users.

V. Outlook

Finally, I would like to say that the version of the portal I designed is operational, and I have started teaching users how to use this new tool. As I mentioned earlier, this easily implemented portal has been showcased at other sites such as Grenoble. I feel safe in assuming that it will become increasingly important in the future.

Peu étonnant qu'on fasse des erreurs. On a affaire à une langue qui conforme à la syntaxe et au génie d'une source germanique.

Bon week-end !
