Salut, Difficultman.
You'll never guess what I found out after I got home from school. My grandmother was both furious and crying at the same time in the kitchen. She thought we didn't want to have anything more to do with her and confessed that she was black. I was dazed and touched by this revelation, and became aware of her skin color for the first time in my 15 years of life. I was in total shock because I had never considered myself black. I couldn't believe it!
I told Jill that very evening because I thought she didn't know, and it would be a good idea to do so. Do you think it's a good idea? I didn't speak too fast. I asked her if she knew, and she answered yes. So as not to offend anybody, I said I had found out about that by myself.
Jill wasn't surprised at what I said and admitted that she was black too, and that it was an aboriginal thing. At first, I didn't understand very much; but after awhile, I did understand. I sensed Jill's nervousness and my awkwardness. Jill even treated me as if I was scatterbrained. She explained that in their school, the Aborigines are not well accepted; and even Susan's mother doesn't want her to associate with her because she's a bad influence on her.
Poor Jill is unhappy with the idea of being an Aborigine and of being ill thought of because she really gets along well in her social environment. She loves the school she's in and wants to feel accepted. I tried to comfort her by saying nothing will ever change, and that she'll have to accept it; but Jill refused to understand. She thinks being an Aborigine is something terrible. As for me, I never gave it much thought until today.
I personally don't have any problem knowing my family members are Aborigines. So am I. I'll never stop loving them. I also told Jill not to worry about what people think, and to live her life in spite of the difficulties she may face. Do you agree with me? I think my reaction was a good one. Would you have reacted differently?
Bravo... another interesting story!
