Cher Mathias,

Business email still seems to be flourishing, but personal email appears to be on the decline. One can't help noticing that once the spam is removed, the average email inbox contains fewer messages than it did a few years ago. Some email volume has been taken over by instant messaging, as people often stay in touch that way now. It's quite possible that spam alone is killing email. Add all the bogus messages containing viruses, and you can see people becoming disillusioned. But the problem of spam and computer viruses has been resolved by the creation of very sohpisticated software to deal with those problems.
Let's look at some of the problems with email, aside from spam, scams, and viruses. The same people who once dragged their laptops around so they could answer their email now prefer the convenience, comfort, and instant contact provided by a cell phone.
No, I personally believe that the desire for immediate contact response by instant messaging or cellphone use is more of a threat to email than the ones previously cited.
