Charlie Chaplin is a famous English comedy actor, but also a great director, composer and musician. He defended silent theatre and spread it into the world. Yet, his childhood wasn’t so happy : he was born on 16 april 1889, 4 days before Hitler, in London. His parents were both music-hall entertainers and Charlie learned singing from them. Charlie’s father gave up his family when Charlie was only 3 years old. Charlie’s mother had a mental disease and while she was at the psychiatric hospital, Charlie had to live in a orphanage and, later, with his father and his alcoholic mother-in-law, with very bad conditions for a child. It was an act of defiance against German dictator Adolf Hitler and nazism. Unfortunately, the film had been forbidden in Europe until 1946. In 1952, on a ship to England, he was informed that he might not be permitted back into the States because of his alleged leftist views. Salut, Luminatis.

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was a famous English comedy actor, as well as a great director, composer and musician. He defended the silent film industry and was responsible for its worldwide distribution. Yet, his childhood wasn’t so happy: he was born on 16 April 1889, 4 days before Hitler came to power. His parents were both music-hall entertainers and Chaplin learned singing from them. His father abandoned his family when Charlie was only 3 years old. Chaplin's mother had a mental disease, and while she was being treated at a psychiatric hospital, he had to live in an orphanage, then later with his father and his alcoholic stepmother. These were very bad circumstances for a child. When he was 5, Charlie Chaplin began singing as an on-stage replacement for his mother who couldn’t do it anymore. At age 7, he lost his father who died in the street as a result of his alcoholism. Between 9 and 12 years of age, Charlie started a career in the theatre thanks to his brother Sydney. In the meantime, he met Stan Laurel, who became one of Charlie's most important friends. Starting in 1903, he made a lot of contracts in the theatre, such as being hired by the Keystone company. It's with this company that Chaplin began his rise to fame throughout the whole world. He started to act in some films. But Chaplin couldn’t stand dealing with contemporary directors anymore. So, he decided to to produce his own films. He was at once an extraordinary success.

Chaplin remained a staunch defender of the silent theatre. He became a professional in mimes because he wanted everyone to easily understand him and that was a universal language. Over the years, silent films were disappearing, and he began introducing a few spoken dialogues in his films. His last silent film, which was also the last in the history of silent movies and one of the most famous, was “Modern Times”. At the beginning of the Second World War, he created his first talkie entitled, “The Great Dictator”, in wich he played the character of Hitler. It was an act of defiance against the German dictator Adolf Hitler and nazism. Unfortunately, the film was banned in Europe until 1946. In 1952, while on a ship to England, he was informed that he might not be permitted back into the States because of his alleged leftist views. So, he settled in Switzerland with his family until his death in 1977. Before his death, he received a few awards including the International Peace Award. Chaplin died when he was 88 years old. He had 11 children and was married many times, always with women much younger than him.
