Chère Rowenna,

Je suis désolé d'apprendre que tu te sens mal.

Exercice 1

Réécrire au style indirecte les dialogues suivant (on the phone):
a) Fred:"Hello, Jim!""Will you come to George's birthday party"
Fred greets Jim, and asks him if he'll come to George's birthday party.
Jim:"I'll stay at home.I'm not feeling very well"
Jim answers that he'll stay at home because he's not feeling very well.
Fred: "Ring him up, or else ill think you're coming !
Fred advises Jim to ring George up and let him know he's not coming.
Jim: "You're quite right.I'll call him without fail when I get home”
Jim agrees, and says he'll call George without fail as soon as he gets home.

b) ”Why don’t we go to the cinema together, the three of us? I’ll get my wife to telephone you.”
He suggests the three of them go to the cinema together. He says he'll get his wife to call her.
“I’ll rarely go out in the evenings”, she replies calmly.
She calmly replies that she rarely goes out in the evenings.
“Well, don’t worry, I’ll take you home afterwards.”
He tells her not to worry because he'll take her home afterwards.

Exercice 2: que dirai-t-on au discours direct? .Complétez.

1. John suggested we should all go to the pictures.He saie :
"Why don't we all go to the pictures."
2. Alison wondered whether Allan had arrived or not. She asked:
"I wonder whether Allan has arrived or not."
3. The customs officers ordered us to open our suitcases.They said:
"Open your suitcases!"
4. She asked her daughter why she had had her hair cut so short.She said:
"Why did you have your hair cut so short?"
5. Tim thought Jennifer had a beautiful dress.He exclaimed:
"What a beautiful dress you have on!"

Exercice 3

Ecrivez les énoncés ci-dessous au style indirect. Utilisez les verbes suivants pour introduire l’énoncé indirect : deny, advise, tell, be to, insist
1. »You thief ! »
I told him he was a thief.
2. « go away ! »
She insisted he go away.
3. « You mustn’t answer any of his questions”.
We told them they weren't to answer any of his questions.
4. “No! I didn’t speak to her”
He denied speaking to her.
5. “Please go and ask him.”
She advised me to go and ask him.
6. “I think you’d better give up.”
I advised them to give up.

Exercice 4:

Ecrivez les énoncés suivants au style indirect en utilisant les amorces proposées:
1. »I’ll ring him up as soon as I get there, » Mary said.
She told me she'd ring him up as soon as she got there.
2.”He couldn’t see where I was going at the time,” Jean replied.
She explained to me that he couldn't see where he was going at the time.
3.”Bring me the letters the minute they come”.
The boss ordered me to bring him the letters the minute they came.
4.I couldn’t see Peter last week,”John thought.
John wondered why he couldn't see Peter last week.
5.Will you take this book or that one?”
She asked me if I'd take this book or that one.

Exercice 5: Réécrivez les énoncés suivants au style indirect:

1. »What a lovely bedroom ! »
She exclaimed how lovely the bedroom was.
2. « hello ! Do sit down ! »
He greeted me, and invited me to sit down.
3. « Oh ! sorry ! I’ve broken the jug ! »
I apologized for breaking the jug. (or, ... for having broken the jug)
4. “Help!”
They begged for help.
5. “How silly of you! You have torn his letter!”
She scolded me for tearing his letter. (or, ... for having torn his letter)

Exercice 6: choisissez la réponse qui convient :

Exercice 7: Transformez le passage entre guillemets au style indirect:
When Sandra came in she was wearing her mother's
fur coat.

“Do come in, Sandra!”, said Maggie.”Oh! You’re wearing fur! I’m afraid that we don’t approve of fur in this house.Every time i see it i think of the poor animals.Would you like to put it on the chair? I don’t like to touch it.I’d rather touch the animal instead.
Maggie invited Sandra to come in, and expressed her surprise that Sandra was wearing fur. She informed her that they don't approve of fur in that house. Maggie explained that every time she sees it, she thinks of the poor animals. She requested Sandra put it on the chair because she didn't like to touch it. She said she'd rather touch the animal instead.

Bonjour doudou!
Il y a quelque chose que je ne comprends pas: dans les exercices quand tu as tranformé du style direct au style indirect, tu a gardé au présent or j'ai appris qu'on devait changer de temps:ex: présent=prétérit...

Bonjour, Rowenna.

Tu ferais sans aucun doute allusion à l'exercice nº 1/a.

Tout d'abord, il faut réaliser que les règles qu'on apprend à l'école ne sont pas écrites sur des tables de pierre.

Il existe en anglais tout comme en français ce qu'on appelle le présent narratif, même si l'action a lieu dans le passé.

De plus, rien n'indique dans le premier exercice qu'il s'agit du temps passé; mais si on veut, on peut bien s'en servir.

J'espère que je t'ai un peu éclairée.
