bonjour,

d'avance merci

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

For the many immigrants that flocked from Europe to New York, the Statue of Liberty was the first image they saw of the USA. The statue was a gift from the French government for the 100th birthday of America's Independence.

Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is located in New York southwest of the southern tip of Manhattan. It is a statue given to the United States by France to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. On October 28th, 1886 it was inaugurated by President Grover Cleveland.

The Statue was completed in Paris in Gaget-Gauthier’s workshops, in 1878, by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the an engineer Gustave Eiffel for the metal frame. The fram is in fact, hollow and covered to riveted copper plates. Its pedestal is out of stone of Kersanton.

The first model at little scale was realized in 1870.

The hand and the torch, in reall dimensions, the right arm and the torch, which were completed earlier, had been exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1876, then exhibited in Madison Square, in New York. The head was exhibited in the Worl Fair of Paris.
The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885 on board the French frigate Isere.
It quickly became national emblem of the United States and one of the most universal symbols of freedom and democracy.

The height of the statue itself, from the top of the base to the torch, is 151 feet (46 m).It represents a draped woman who holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left. The tablet shows the caption JULY 4, 1776, the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. One of her feet stands on chains, symbolizing the acquired freedom.
The seven spikes in the crown represent the seven seas or seven continents.
It used to be possible to take the staircase inside the statue and walk all the way up the 354 steps to the head; but for security reasons it was not allowed anymore for some time after september, 2001 (terror attacks).
The "New Colossus": Famous sonnet written by Emma Lazarus in 1883. A bronze plaque, dedicated in memory of Emma Lazarus' contribution to the completion of the Statue's pedestal, has been affixed to the inner walls of the pedestal since the early 1900's.

Liberty Island is federal property located within the territorial jurisdiction of the State of New York.

On October 28th, 1886 was inaugurated. President Grover Cleveland accepted the Statue on behalf of the United States and said in part: "We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected.
The National Park Service commemorates the anniversary of the Statue of Liberty annually on October 28th.

The Statue of Liberty since the September 11,2001 terror attacks has been closed to the public; it is set to partially reopen on August 3
They receive over 5 million visitors at Liberty and Ellis Islands annually.
