Mauvaises nouvelles.

1) What is the highlight of the evening at a workingmen’s club ? Choose one answer and justify in your own words and with two quotes from the text.

a. a church service
b. the performance of a musical group
c. a game of chance played for money
d. a sports event with prizes

The highlight of the evening at a workingmen’s club is a game of chance where people can win a lot of money.

« the central event of the evenin’s entertainment is not the act, or the « turn », as it’s known, but the playing of bingo » (l.2)
« And now, without further ado, the high spot of the evening, for a cash prize of one hundred pounds... » (l. 51)

2) What exactly happens on stage ? Find two quotes confirming this.

a. people play table-tennis
b. balls are thrown to the spectators
c. a magician performs tricks
d. numbers are called out
« He reads the numbers out and places the balls neatly in a waiting rack. » (l. 7)
« The bingo caller, usually the club secretary, will read out these numbers...» (l. 14)

3) The atmosphere of the main event is at different times associated with two of the following :

a. justice
b. sport
c. religion
d. art

Which two ? In each case justify with two quotations
USE THE LINES THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "QUASI-RELIGIOUS" AND "HIGH PRIEST"
Certain terms in the text make one think of a courtroom rather than a bingo hall.
« The bingo caller, usually the club secretary, will read out these numbers with the solemnity of a hanging judge. » (l. 14)
« The atmosphere is charged with high drama. » (l. 54)

4) The numbers CALLED out (lines 8-12) are preceded by certain images or other associations. Explain the images used for the following numbers :

a. ten… DOWNING STREET (PRIME MINISTER'S LONDON ADDRESS)
b. twenty-two… TWO SMALL DUCKS
c. eighty-eight … TWO FAT WOMEN

5) Where are Sting and the musicians in the early part of the evening ? Why ? How are they linked with the bingO machine ? (50 words)

Sting and the other members of the Phoenix Jazzmen are lounging in the dressing room of a club which is located in a tough working-class neighborhood in the north of a city named Sunderland. They're waiting until they can perform before the bingo crowd at 9 p.m. after the bingo game is over.

6) Who are the following people ?

a. the Syrup => THE CLUB CHAIRMAN'S WIG
b. Gordon is the LEADER OF THE PHOENIX JAZZMEN
c. Ronnie IS A BAND MEMBER OF THE PHOENIX JAZZMEN
d. Sting IS A PERFORMER IN THE BAND, THE PHOENIX JAZZMEN

7) Explain the origin of the name « Sting »
IT'S THE NAME GIVEN HIM BY GORDON BECAUSE HE ONCE WORD A SWEATER WITH YELLOW AND BLACK STRIPES THAT MADE HIM LOOK LIKE A WASP.

a. What happens in the dressing room ?
GORDON ACCIDENTALLY SNAPS THE PLASTIC MEMBRANE THAT KEEPS THE BINGO BALLS IN PLACE IN THE PERPLEX MACHINE. correction d'une faute de frappe ici
b. What is Gordon’s reaction ?
HE'S HORRIFIED BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN ONCE THE MACHINE IS TURNED ON. correction d'une faute de frappe ici
c. What does the club chairman do ?
THE CLUB CHAIRMAN COMES INTO THE LOUNGE WITH TWO ASSISTANTS TO GET THE PERPLEX MACHINE.

9) What is the club chairman’s opinion of the Phoenix Jazzmen’s music ? What does he want them to do ? Why ?
HE DOESN'T LIKE THE JAZZ MUSIC THE BAND PLAYED BEFORE. HE WANTS THE BAND TO PLAY MUSIC THAT THE GIRLS CAN DANCE TO.

10) Describe in your words what happens on stage and the scene in the workingmen’s club ?
WHEN THE PERPLEX MACHINE IS TURNED ON ALL THE BALLS COME FLYING OUT ALL OVER THE HALL. SOME HIT PEOPLE, SOME LAND IN THEIR BEER OR UNDER THEIR FEET. IT'S A REAL DISASTER.

Tu m'avais corriger mon devoir sur le sujet suivant: "what does the word "music" suggest to you?" !
BISOUS!
